Duplicate, Reissued or Name-Corrected Degree: Can It Be Attested for the UAE?

Duplicate degree certificate from Rivermere Global University being stamped with a golden ATTESTED seal for UAE document verification.

Can a Duplicate Degree Certificate Be Attested?

Yes, if the university issued the duplicate itself. The attestation chain checks the university’s signature and seal, not whether the paper is the first copy.

A “DUPLICATE” mark on the certificate is normal. It doesn’t stop attestation.

What won’t work is a photocopy, a scan or a certificate printed by anyone other than the university. Those fail at the first verification step.

What a usable duplicate looks like

Check your duplicate for these details before you send it anywhere:

  • The university’s official name, seal and authorised signature
  • Your full name exactly as the university records it
  • The degree title, specialisation and year of award
  • A certificate or reference number
  • A duplicate notation, if the university uses one

Do you need a police report for a lost degree?

Only if your university asks for one. The police report or affidavit is part of the university’s replacement process, not the UAE attestation process.

Ask the registrar for its duplicate-certificate procedure in writing. Keep the application receipt and the issue letter with your file.

Can a Reissued Degree Be Attested?

Yes. A reissued degree is attested like an original, once the university confirms it replaces your earlier certificate.

Universities reissue certificates after damage, printing errors, record corrections or a change of certificate design. Each reason leaves a different paper trail.

The university changed its certificate format

A new design isn’t a problem on its own. The verifying authority checks the university’s records, not the look of the paper.

If your old and new certificates look very different, ask for a short letter confirming the reissue. It answers the question before anyone asks it.

The university corrected an error

The corrected certificate must match the university’s updated records. Check the correction appears on the new certificate, not only in a letter.

Keep the old certificate unless the university takes it back. It shows the history if a verifier queries the change.

Can a Name-Corrected Degree Be Attested?

Yes, but the corrected name has to connect cleanly to your passport. The name mismatch, not the correction itself, is what delays files.

Fix the mismatch before the certificate enters the attestation chain. A correction found halfway through usually means paying for steps twice.

Spelling errors and initials

Ask the university to correct its record and issue a corrected certificate. If it won’t reissue, ask for a letter confirming both spellings refer to you.

Compare the degree with your passport letter by letter. Check the spelling, the order of names, initials and the surname.

On the degreeOn the passportWhat to do
Priya K.Priya KrishnanAsk the university to expand the initial, or issue a letter linking both
Mohd. RafeeqMohammed RafeekGet a corrected certificate or a university letter confirming the spelling
Anjali Menon (maiden name)Anjali Nair (married name)Keep the marriage certificate and a name-change document with the file

Never alter the certificate yourself. A hand-corrected degree fails attestation outright.

A legal name change

A legal name change needs a document linking your old name to your current one. That’s usually an official name-change certificate, a gazette notification or a court order.

Pair it with your passport and, where the university provides one, a letter linking both names. An affidavit on its own is the weakest option, so use it only alongside other proof.

Your passport and degree still don’t match

Expect the recognition authority or employer to ask for proof linking the two names. Have that proof ready before you apply.

If the university says the name was correct when it issued the degree, get that in writing. It shows the change happened later and why.

How Attestation Works for a Duplicate or Reissued Degree

The chain is the same as for an original. What changes is how much paperwork you carry alongside the certificate.

Step 1: Get the official certificate from the university

Request the duplicate or corrected certificate directly from the registrar or examinations office. Keep every receipt and letter.

Step 2: Make sure the university can verify it

Ask how employers and authorities verify replacement certificates. Some universities use online verification. Others confirm by letter.

This step matters most. Every later stage depends on the university answering a verification request.

Step 3: Complete the issuing country’s chain

For an Indian degree, that’s state or university verification, then the Ministry of External Affairs, then the UAE Embassy. Kerala degrees go through NORKA Roots for the state step.

Other countries follow the same pattern with their own authorities. Our Indian certificate attestation in the UAE page covers the full Indian route.

Step 4: UAE MOFA attestation

MOFA attests the degree last, after the embassy step. Its FAQs set two firm rules: no laminated documents, and Arabic or English only, or an official translation.

If your degree or supporting letter is in another language, arrange legal translation services before this step.

Step 5: Check whether MOHESR recognition applies

Attestation and recognition are different. Attestation proves the document is genuine. MOHESR recognition decides whether the qualification counts in the UAE.

You’ll need recognition for licensed professions, government jobs and further study. In 2025, MOHESR cut the required documents from 14 to four, under Ministerial Resolution No. 34 of 2025.

What If the University Can’t Verify Your Degree?

Stop and fix verification before paying for any further step. No attestation stage can work around a university that won’t confirm the degree.

Verification gets stuck when records are archived, the portal lacks older years or the institution has changed its name. Our guide on why old certificates are harder to verify covers this in depth.

Work through these in order:

  1. Write to the registrar or controller of examinations with your roll number and year.
  2. Ask for written confirmation of the award and the replacement certificate.
  3. Ask whether a manual verification route exists for older records.
  4. Keep every written reply, even refusals.

What If the University Merged or Closed?

Find out who holds the records now. That body becomes your verifier for every attestation step.

After a merger, the successor university usually holds the old records. Ask it for a lYes. A duplicate, reissued or name-corrected degree can be attested for the UAE. Your university must issue it and be able to verify it.

What matters is the source, not the word “duplicate” on the paper. A university-issued replacement follows the same attestation chain as an original.

The hard cases sit around it. A name that doesn’t match your passport, a merged or closed university, or lost records. This guide covers each one.

The Four Cases at a Glance

Each case can be attested. What changes is the supporting evidence you’ll need.

CaseCan it be attested? What the university must provideMain risk
Duplicate (lost or damaged original)YesAn officially issued duplicate it can verifyA photocopy or locally printed copy offered instead
Reissued (new format or corrected error)YesThe new certificate, plus a letter if the format changedOld and new certificates don’t match
Name-correctedYesThe corrected certificate or a correction letterPassport and degree still don’t match

etter confirming its role and your award.

For a closed institution, contact the state education department or the affiliating university. In India, the affiliating university often holds records for closed colleges.

Eight Mistakes That Stall Duplicate Degree Files

  1. Sending a photocopy as a duplicate. Only a university-issued certificate works.
  2. Hand-correcting the certificate. Any alteration fails attestation.
  3. Starting the chain with a name mismatch. Fix it first, or pay twice.
  4. Relying on an affidavit alone. It’s the weakest name-linking proof.
  5. Throwing away the old certificate. It explains the reissue if anyone asks.
  6. Skipping the issuing-country chain. MOFA won’t attest without it.
  7. Confusing attestation with MOHESR recognition. They answer different questions.
  8. Sending a laminated certificate. MOFA rejects it outright.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I attest a duplicate degree certificate for the UAE?

Yes, if your university issued the duplicate and can verify it. It follows the same chain as an original.

Does “DUPLICATE” printed on the certificate cause rejection?

No. The mark is normal. Verifiers check the university’s records, not whether it’s the first copy.

Can I attest a degree with a spelling mistake in my name?

Yes, after the university corrects it or confirms it in writing. Fix it before attestation starts.

Is an affidavit enough for a name mismatch?

Rarely on its own. Use it alongside a university letter or an official name-change document.

Is degree attestation the same as MOHESR equivalency?

No. Attestation proves the document is genuine. Recognition decides whether the qualification counts in the UAE.

What if my college has closed?

Ask the affiliating university or state education department who holds the records. They then verify the degree.
