Can Your Spouse Work on a UAE Family Visa? (2026 Rules)
Yes. A spouse on a family residence visa can work in the UAE once an employer gets a MOHRE work permit for family-sponsored dependents.
You do not have to cancel the family visa to take the job. If you are still sorting out the sponsorship itself, our family visa services in Dubai page covers that side.
Three Routes
| Route | Residence stays with | Who applies | Best for |
| A. Family contract work permit | Your spouse’s sponsorship | The employer, through MOHRE | Most private-sector jobs |
| B. Employer transfer | The employer, as new sponsor | The employer | Roles where the company insists on sponsoring you |
| C. Freelance permit | Set by the issuing authority | You, with that authority | Independent client work |
Most couples end up on Route A. It is the fastest to set up and keeps your residence where it is.
Option A: The Family Contract Work Permit
MOHRE calls this service “work permits for dependents sponsored by family members”. The employer applies, and the application must come from the company’s authorised signatory.
MOHRE’s stated processing time is two working days. The permit is valid for two years and covers full-time, part-time, temporary, flexible, remote and job-sharing contracts.
What MOHRE asks for
- A clear colour photo on a white background
- A passport copy valid for at least six months
- The official MOHRE job offer form, signed by employer and employee
- Your academic certificate, matched to the job’s skill level
- A professional licence, if the profession is regulated
The employee must be 18 or older and must not hold another active work permit. The job also has to match the company’s licensed activity.
What it costs
| Item | Fee |
| Work permit application | AED 50 |
| Work permit issuance | AED 250 |
| Business service centre commission | Capped at AED 72 |
No electronic quota is needed for this permit. Fees exclude tax and collection charges, so check MOHRE’s service card before you pay.
Do you need a sponsor NOC?
MOHRE’s service card for this permit lists no NOC and no marriage certificate. Some employers still ask for a sponsor letter for their own files.
Treat that as company policy, not a MOHRE rule. Ask HR which one they are actually requesting.
Option B: Employer Transfer to an Employment Visa
Here the employer becomes your sponsor. Your family residency is replaced by a residence tied to the job.
Choose this one deliberately. Ask what happens to your residence if the job ends, because the family sponsorship no longer sits behind you.
Option C: Freelancing
A freelance permit covers independent self-employment, with no sponsoring employer and no employment contract. Your clients are customers, not employers.
In Dubai, the permit comes from the Department of Economy and Tourism or from free zones that issue freelance licences for certain activities. You can get a freelance visa only after you hold the permit.
Whether someone on a spouse visa can hold that permit depends on the issuing authority. Confirm it in writing before you pay any fee.

MOHRE Skill Levels Decide Your Paperwork
The certificate MOHRE expects depends on the job’s skill level. Higher levels need a higher qualification.
| Skill level | Minimum certificate |
| Levels 1–2 | Bachelor’s degree or higher |
| Levels 3–4 | Diploma or higher |
| Level 5 | High school certificate |
| Levels 6–9 | None required |
MOHRE’s card treats workers earning under AED 4,000 a month, or without a degree, as not skilled. That classification affects how the file is read.
The card names the academic certificate. Gulf News describes the skilled-worker test as needing a certificate attested by the competent authorities. Assume your employer wants an attested degree certificate before they file, and ask HR to confirm.
Degree Verification: Where the Delay Sits
The permit takes MOHRE two working days. The degree can take far longer, and authorities set those timelines, not us.
A foreign degree typically moves through the issuing country’s authorities, then the UAE embassy, then the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Start the chain before you accept a start date.
The usual snags are small ones. A name spelled differently on the degree and the passport can hold the whole file.
Indian graduates usually have extra home-country stages before the UAE steps. Read up on Indian degree certificate attestation before you commit to a joining date.
Regulated Professions: Equivalency Cons Into It
Doctors, nurses, teachers and engineers need a professional licence on top of the permit. The licensing authority decides what it will accept.
Many of these files also need a degree equivalency certificate from the UAE Ministry of Education, now called the Certificate of Recognition. Gulf News reports that engineers need it before registering for a Society of Engineers card, and that health licences now include it.
Plan for it before you pick a start date. The Ministry’s site has quoted 35 to 45 working days, and complicated cases run longer.
Check with the licensing authority whether your profession’s route needs attestation first. Some specialised routes treat it differently.
What Happens If You Work Without the Permit
The 2024 labour law amendments raised fines for infractions including unauthorised employment to AED 100,000 to AED 1,000,000, up from AED 50,000 to AED 200,000. They took effect on 30 August 2024.
The exposure lands hardest on the employer. That is why careful employers won’t let you start on a verbal go-ahead.
Ask a lawyer about your own liability before you work a single day without the permit.
Mistakes We See Most
- Starting before the permit is issued. A job offer is not a work permit.
- Filing with an unattested degree. The permit moves fast, then stalls on the certificate.
- Ignoring the activity match. The role has to fit the company’s licensed activity.
- Holding another active permit. MOHRE requires that you have none.
- Missing the equivalency step in regulated professions.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can my spouse work part-time on a family visa?
Yes. The same MOHRE permit covers part-time, temporary, flexible, remote and job-sharing contracts.
Can a husband work on his wife’s family visa?
The MOHRE service covers dependents sponsored by family members. The service card sets no gender condition.
How long does the whole process take?
MOHRE targets two working days for the permit. Degree attestation and licensing steps are what stretch the timeline.
Will an attested degree guarantee the permit?
No. MOHRE and the employer make the decision, and requirements can change.
Need Your Degree Ready Before the Offer Date?
Our team prepares and routes degree attestation, so the certificate is not what holds up your spouse’s job. Share your degree details with our team to check the route.
We are a private attestation and document service, not MOHRE or a government body. Rules and fees change, so confirm them with MOHRE before you apply. Nothing here is legal advice or a guarantee of approval.
